Speakers, Hear This!

Minda Rae Amiron | Published on 1/13/2024
The Civics Education Committee is in the process of updating its speakers list for Whatcom County schools.  As a result of the last elections there are new officials who might speak to classes about their work and “old” officials who are leaving office.  You may recall that the League created this list at the request of social studies teachers, who don’t usually have the time to scout for speakers themselves.  A recent survey suggests that not all of the speakers have been called on, but some have been invited to more than one classroom.  You can view the current list on the Civics Education page of our League website.  Click the button in the mid-section of the page.

Did you know?  The list of speakers is not confined to elected officials.  It also includes League members and others who are willing to discuss social studies topics with middle-school or high school classes, whether in person or by Zoom.  Suitable topics might include climate-related activities, diplomatic experience abroad, work for the U.N.—the possibilities are extensive.  Speaking with young people about civic or government action promotes their engagement with democracy, and it’s fun and rewarding. If you are willing to join the speakers list, or know someone who has experience to contribute, please notify the Civics Education Committee at civicseducation@lwvbellinghamwhatcom.org.
