What to Know about Public Hospital Districts

Mary Lynne Courtney | Published on 8/12/2023
What is a Public Hospital District (PHD)?  What does it do?  Why might communities form one?  If you were at the Healthcare Issues Team meeting on July 17th you could answer these questions. (And by the way, you are welcome to come to our meetings—see next date below.)

At that meeting we showed a video, PHD 101, produced by the LWVWA Public Hospital District Civics Education Group that presented information about PHDs and how they might address identified gaps in local healthcare.  I think many of us were surprised to learn that we have a PHD in Whatcom County, in Point Roberts.

After the video, attendees had an opportunity to ask questions about PHDs.  You can access the video, PHD 101, from the LWVWA website page lwvwa.org/public_hospital_districts.  That page also has other information about PHDs, such how to form a PHD and how to work with a PHD if your area is already part of a PHD.

The Healthcare Issues Team will not meet in August.  Our next meeting will be September 18th when Maureen Brinck-Lund will update us on what is happening in the Washington Universal Health Care Commission. Please note the change from our usual meeting date—in September we have shifted our meeting to the third Monday, September 18th in order to have the latest information about the Commission.
