Members Meet in Person - First Time in Years!

Published on 6/18/2022
LWV BWC members gathered at the Mt Baker Theatre on June 18 for the 2022 annual member meeting. It was wonderful for friends to see one another face to face after so long meeting by Zoom. Delicious treats were provided by several volunteers. Mt Baker Theatre donated the use of their Encore room, and equipment was provided by MBT so we could involve an equal number of members attending by Zoom.

If you missed the meeting (and the two excellent presentations described below), you may view a recording on the Member Resources page of the website.  Note that you will need to log in to the website.  Look for Member Resources in the "For Members" menu.

Officially the results of the ballot were announced: the minutes of the first half of last year’s annual meeting were approved, along with the proposed budget, the program plan, and two bylaws changes. One assigned the responsibility for electing officers to the Board at their first meeting of the year, and the other assigned to the board the responsibility of setting the dues schedule, in the hope that the board will adopt “rolling” membership, whereby a member will have a full year of membership starting from the join date. This is now easier thanks to the automation provided by the League’s new membership management system (and website). Attendees also approved the minutes for the second half of last year’s annual meeting, which were not available at the time the ballot was distributed.

One highlight of the morning was the presentation by Stephen Gockley, a retired civil legal aid lawyer and member of the League since 2015. Gockley urged League members to take on the dire human needs here in Whatcom County.  You may view his presentation or read a transcription of his talk on the Member Resources page of the website.

Another highlight was a presentation by Heather Mackay-Brown, who described her youth activism in South Africa and showed a video describing the Black Sash anti-apartheid organization.

The League bids farewell and many thanks to retiring board members Michael Jay, Heather Mackay-Brown, Julie Mauerman, Joy Monjure and Allison Williams. We hope their involvement in the League continues.

The League congratulates new board members Minda Rae Amiran, Setsuko Buckley, Sislena Ledbetter, and Nancy Sheng. Thank you for agreeing to serve. There is a lot of work ahead!
