Save the Date: Membership Meeting February 22

Published on 1/13/2025
Have you worried that schoolchildren today are no longer studying civics?  You and your friends are warmly invited to our members' meeting at 10 a.m. on February 22 at the Unitarian Fellowship in Bellingham, where you will hear from a panel of Whatcom County educators about the new school civics requirements and how they are being met.

Panelists will include Shannon Eubank of Sehome High School, Kristi Dominguez, Superintendent of the Ferndale School District, and a middle-school teacher yet to be confirmed.

The Civics Education Team is planning the panel discussion, which will fill the first hour of the meeting, and the public is encouraged to attend.  The format will be question-and-answer, starting with a few questions from the Team and continuing with ample time for questions from the audience.  We hope all who attend will better understand what our students are learning about their government, how they can be engaged, and what challenges the schools face at this time.  The Team also would like to understand ways that the League can help with advocacy or service.

During the second hour we will be considering two programs being proposed for study at the state League level. The first would be a review and update of the League of Women Voters of Washington’s study of Washington State Indian Treaty Rights. The original study was done in 1980, and much has happened since then.

The second proposed program would be an educational report assessing the state of democracy in Washington State. The study would be similar to a study done by the League of Women Voters of Maine.

The Unitarian Fellowship is located at 1207 Ellsworth St. in Bellingham.

The entire meeting will be in-person and also accessible by Zoom. Please register for the event on the League website if you wish to attend via Zoom.  We look forward to seeing you at this exciting event.
