Decline of Local Journalism - the Winter Member Meeting
The decline of local newspapers is weakening American democracy to an alarming degree. A study by LWVWA reveals that Washington's recent loss of 24 weeklies, 3 dailies, and 67% of newsroom staff leaves voters disengaged, uninformed about local issues and candidates, and vulnerable to deception on social media. What can the League do to help preserve or revive local news?
Come to this meeting to listen and engage with a panel of local journalists who can discuss the impacts on local news in Whatcom County. Panelists are
Mike Lewis, President & Publisher of the family owned
Lynden Tribune
, that produces print & online issues.
Amy Nelson, Founder and Executive Director of the
Salish Current
, a non-partisan, non-profit online newspaper.
Robert Mittendorf, experienced journalist who covers civic issues for the
Bellingham Herald
. (The Bellingham Herald is part of McClatchy News and is owned by Chatham Asset Management.)
Attendees will have an opportunity to ask their own questions at this event.
Members are welcome to invite a guest, someone who isn’t a member yet but should be, or someone we should get to know.
This will be a
hybrid
meeting; in-person at the Mt Baker Theatre Encore Room and by Zoom.
Come at 9:30 for cookies and coffee to mingle with other League members and friends!
Registration is required and necessary to receive the Zoom link.
