Women's Economic Security Issue Team

Mission:

The Women’s Economic Security team was formed to advocate for reforms and programs that will alleviate the economic insecurity experienced by women and others living in poverty.

Program Plan for 2021-2022:

Support and advocate for access to living wage jobs, credit, housing, childcare, healthcare, transportation, and education… all necessary for economic security.

Participate with local organizations to provide programming that will inform & engage underrepresented communities in voting and advocating for their needs.

Plan and present programs to inform members and non-members about poverty and the policy changes needed to alleviate economic insecurity with the goal of motivating those who are underserved (or unrepresented) to become active advocates for change.

Monitor local government and non-government efforts to remove barriers to economic opportunity and security.

Position:

Women's Economic Security
in Whatcom County

The League of Women Voters® of Bellingham/Whatcom County (LWVBWC) agrees that when women achieve economic security, the communities in which they live rise to new heights of prosperity and health. We support the right of every woman to have access to a path that permits her to attain economic security for herself and her children who may depend on her.

The League first adopted a position in 1988 on Meeting Basic Human Needs.  In 2015 a new study was undertaken to consider women's economic security, resulting in a new position statement.

In 2019 a follow-up report recommended the position be updated using a racial equity lens.
