In September, members of the every-other-month LWV book group met at the Skylark Cafe to discuss their reactions and what they had learned from Poverty, By America. Many were encouraged that the author, Matthew Desmond, shared his ideas about what individuals could do to alleviate the cycle of poverty in the U.S. He also pointed out policy changes that would tear down the walls keeping many Americans on the bottom rung.
For November the group will read
Sold by Patricia Mc Cormack. This is a novel is written in a series of short, vignettes from the perspective of a woman in Nepal who was sold into prostitution to support her family.
For January, our book will be
Rough Sleepers by Tracy Kidder.
