The Voter June

Primary Election Candidate Interviews

The primary election is on August 5, and League volunteers are hard at work interviewing the primary election candidates for the Whatcom County Council, the Port of Bellingham Commission, the City Council of Blaine and the City Council of Sumas.

The short videos are intended to give viewers a quick way to get information about a candidate.  Keep an eye out for an alert announcing the availability of the videos on the League's website.

Nonpartisan: The League Difference

As we experience a significant jump in League membership, it’s important to understand what nonpartisanship means for all members of the League of Women Voters.

Most new (and old) members have come to the League hoping to find a way to engage in the political process and avoid the deep political division that threatens our 250 year history of democracy.

Learn more or refresh yourself on how you can remain non-partisan while participating in the LWV.

How can We Support our Rural Libraries?

Yes Whatcom Libraries
The Whatcom County Library is asking voters to consider a levy lid lift on the August 5th ballot. This would provide crucial funds to our local libraries and is unanimously supported by the LWVBWC Board.

Learn about how you can support Library Levy Proposition 2025-05 and the Yes! Whatcom Libraries campaign.

Shout Out to Volunteers in Action!

Our volunteers are always hard at work and answering the call for action. Thank you to volunteers on the Advocacy Team who stepped up to to mail postcards in support of the Whatcom County Library System Levy Lid Lift.

“It takes a village.” Thank You!

Removing Unlawful Restrictive Covenants

Across the state and in our own backyards throughout Whatcom and Skagit counties, there lies a dark history many don’t see. Restrictive covenants, once a common tool of real estate development, were designed to keep neighborhoods racially segregated.

These covenants were not just social customs; they were legal, enforceable, and actively used in many Northwest Washington developments well into the mid-20th century.

Learn more about the racial and discriminatory practice of restrictive covenants and how you can repudiate these documents in our community.

Housing Legislation Impacts

On June 11th, LWVBWC’s Housing Issue Team met with two of the local representatives to the Washington State House regarding the impact of recent housing legislation on Whatcom County.

If you missed it, you can watch the recording on our website!

LWVBWC Healthcare Issues Team Update

Who do you think should sit on the Whatcom County Board of Health? Watch the recording of our May meeting to hear from Council member Jon Scanlon and former Council member Carol Frazey on this topic.

Banned Books

The League has a long-standing principle in defense of individual liberties and in support of citizen participation. We oppose book bans in libraries and other public institutions.

At our upcoming July 30 meeting, book group members can select a book of interest that has been challenged or banned and share their impressions.

Don't miss what will surly be a lively conversation!
