Visit our
Civics Education page for links to a set of 1- to 2-minute educational videos that Carolyn Stewart, our Communications Specialist, has also been posting on our League’s social media platforms. These videos are charmingly read by Siri Hiltz, using scripts resulting from a collaboration among Civics Education committee members Minda Rae Amiran and Annette Holcomb, communication specialists Robin Barker and Carolyn, as well as Eileen McCracken and Siri.
The videos aim to provide adults who missed out on civics in high school some very short lessons to help them understand our democratic system. Some of the topics the videos present are basic information: on the U.S. Constitution’s division of powers and checks and balances, the Electoral College, ranked choice voting, and types of courts (our most recent post). Some topics are particular to our state, such as primary elections, kinds of taxes, and election security. Others relate to current events: such topics include birthright citizenship, presidential powers, politics and the Civil Service, and the definition of a U. S. Constitutional crisis.
Clearly, the videos cannot go into these topics in any depth, but they function as quick guides. They have attracted attention from other Leagues in our state and elsewhere, and we have been happy to let them be posted on those Leagues’ websites as coming from us. If you have ideas for additional topics that we should cover, tell one of the people named above. We are now working on a script to describe the scope and mission of the various armed forces under the Department of Homeland Security.
