LWV Book Group

The book group gives members an opportunity to talk about critical issues in a small group setting.  We meet on the last Wednesday of alternate months.

In July, the book group had another lively and intensive discussion about guns in our culture, how the interpretation of the Second amendment has changed over time (and could change in the future), as well as the League’s policy position about gun ownership.

One consensus idea of the group was that we need to put reduction of gun violence front and center when composing questions for candidates in our forums and in personal conversations with the candidates.  Gun regulation at the state level is key.

The League has well-researched policy positions about gun safety in Washington, and our National policy states:

  • The League supports licensing procedures for gun ownership by private citizens to include a waiting period for background checks, personal identity verification, gun safety education, and annual license renewal. The license fee should be adequate to bear the cost of education and verification.
  • The League supports strong limitations on access to semi-automatic/automatic weapons, enforcement of strict penalties for the improper possession of and crimes committed with handguns and assault weapons, and allocation of resources to better regulate and monitor gun dealers.

Our next book will be Fever in the Heartland: The Ku Klux Klan’s Plot to Take Over America, and the Woman Who Stopped Them by Seattle writer, Timothy Egan. This is a real page turner set in an especially perilous time 100 years ago.  However, readers will notice some themes that are prevalent today.

See the calendar and register for the next meeting on September 25.
