Summer News on Get Out the Vote

July was busy, fun, and energizing for LWV members promoting voter registration. We held 12 events plus a training event for 18 people.  We had a variety of events in July: Jam on the River (Ferndale), Blaine Arts Festival, Sunnyland Stomp, Birchwood International Market, Lighthouse Mission, Maple Alley, and three different food banks (Ferndale, Bellingham, and Maple Falls).  As you see, we are getting around Whatcom County.  Many of our new volunteers have already been active at registration events.

Often people will stop by the registration table and thank us for being at these events to answer questions and to help voters.  We have assisted many new voters in Whatcom County to register and update addresses for voters who have moved within Whatcom County. Voters are energized and interested in voting.

We'll start a big push in September at Western Washington University. There will be teams of volunteers at WWU, from 11:30 am -1:30 pm, for 10 days during September – November 5, with clipboards moving around red square, focusing on registering students, answering questions related to voting and helping students update their mailing addresses; to receive their hometown ballot (if they want) so it will be sent to them in Whatcom County. If students get their ballot directly here in Bellingham, it helps ensure they receive their ballot in time to vote.

We have a third general training on August 19 at the library downtown. There will also be an additional training in September (date is still to be decided).

Thank you for your support and encouragement,
Voter Services Team
