Fall Member Meeting October 5
Please join us for a Member Meeting on October 5, 10a to 12p. Our topic will be advocacy--what it is, why we do it, and what are we advocating for in 2024.
The League of Women Voter’s original advocacy was to secure the right to vote for women. The League was formed 6 months before the 19th amendment was passed by the House and Senate. Then, the League buckled down and advocated state by state to ensure that it was ratified and made into law in 1920.
Today, the LWV can take a stand and advocate on issues if we’ve completed a rigorous study and consensus process. Advocacy is one of our most important functions because it helps to ensure a strong, safe and vibrant community. Now, the League of Women Voters of Washington (LWVWA) are asking us to advocate and vote NO on three state initiatives which will be on our November ballots:
Vote NO on I-2066 Forbid restrictions on access to natural gas
Vote NO on I-2109 Repeal the Capital Gains Tax Initiative
Vote NO on I-2117 Prohibit Carbon Tax Credit Trading and Repeal Carbon Cap-and-Invest Program
Vote NO on I-2124 Opt-out of Long-Term Services Insurance Program Initiative
Cynthia Stewart, first Vice President of LWVWA, will be joining us to explain what advocacy is and how it fits into the mission of the League of Women Voters. Then, guests from each of the VOTE NO organizations linked above will speak on why we should vote no. We will leave knowing how to talk w/ our friends and family about the initiatives.
We'll be meeting in the Social Hall of the Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship. There is free parking in the area, including behind the former Bellingham School District Adminstration building. The hall can also be easily reached by bus, route 232. There is another activity upstairs, so please enter from the rear of the building.
We hope you'll attend in person to get the most out of the program, but this will be a hybrid meeting for those who can't.
Registration is required to receive a Zoom link for participating online (and requested for planning purposes).
